He’s the man who spent five years sculpting the Rolls-Royce Phantom into reality. He’s also a friend of ours at Desert European Motorcars. A Yugoslavian who started his career working on concept BMWs, Marek Djordjevic has been most famous as the original designer of the Rolls-Royce Phantom.
In the photo below, Gary Whitaker, Desert European Motorcars partner, is standing with Marek Djordjevic. Marek has been a friend of the Desert European team since the introduction of the Phantom. In designing the Phantom, Marek has collaborated with Rolls-Royce Motor Cars to create a beautiful icon of traditional elegance in car design. The Phantom today stands as a finished production of Marek’s skills.
The Marek Djordjevic Story
Marek Djordjevic was only 16 or 17 when he moved from Yugoslavia to California with his family. As a foreign exchange student, he didn’t get to pick his destination, and instead of heading to the Los Angeles Pasadena Art Center to begin his training as a car designer, he ended up going to a farm that also hosted a junkyard. Marek, who had an adventurous mind, enjoyed the experience. He was accepted a few years later to the art institute he had always wanted to learn at, based on the drawings he sent in. It was during his final semester as a student that he learned BMW was opening DesignWorks in California. Marek changed his thesis to a BMW 7 Series, and after finishing and setting up his BMW project, he received a phone call for an interview with BMW. Before graduation he freelanced for BMW, and after graduation Marek worked directly for BMW DesignWorks. During his stay at DesignWorks, he created the famous design for the Rolls-Royce Phantom.
Today, Marek Djordjevic is the CEO of his own independent strategic design and luxury brand development company, Marek Djordjevic Inc. He worked for BMW for 15 years, establishing himself as the Creative Director of DesignWorks itself and as the head of exterior design at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. The legacy of Marek Djordjevic lives on in every Phantom that is created.
